The Marquess wears military uniform under the mantle and collar of the order of the Garter. He had been made a Knight of the Garter on 6 July 1857. He was a Member of Parliament from 1818-35, Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire 1845-67 and Lord Steward 1850-2. He and his wife were friends of the Royal family for many years and contemporary accounts state that 'he administered his vast estates with a combination of intelligence and generosity not often witnessed'. The artist's Sitter-Book lists a portrait of the Marquess in 1858, and a copy in 1865.
Provenance
Given to the Board of Green Cloth in 1894 by the sitter’s son, the 1st Duke of Westminster.
