Queen Victoria had arrived in Dublin on 6 August and left from Kingstown on the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert on 10 August. She recorded the occasion depicted in the painting in her Journal: 'We stood on the paddle box, as we slowly & majestically steamed out of Kingstown amidst the cheers of thousands and thousands, & salutes, I, waving my handkerchief as a parting acknowledgement of the loyalty shown me'.
The artist Matthew Kendrick was Irish, the son of a Customs official, who served at sea before becoming a painter and specialising in pictures of harbours and coastlines.Provenance
Purchased by Queen Victoria, April 1850; recorded in the State Visitors' Bedroom no 228 at Buckingham Palace in 1869
