This atmospheric scene of the River Llugwy in Wales was painted by Leader in 1914. The artist has chosen to capture a bend in the river, sheltered by wooded banks, opening to a shallow pool in the foreground. In the middle ground a couple can just been seen, dwarfed by the monumental landscape. The scene is carefully observed and painted, managing to convey a strong impression of the place; the sound of the water, or slight wind through the trees.
Leader was born in Worcester and trained there and at the Royal Academy Schools, London. He first went to Bettws-y-Coed in 1859 in search of new subjects and he visited the area in North Wales for most summers from that year until 1889. The area had been popular with Victorian artists, such as David Cox (1783-1856) long before Leader came here. Turner (1775-1851) and Samuel Palmer (1805-81), similarly attracted by the landscape, had also painted in North Wales.
A similar scene, entitled 'Valley of the Llugwy', 1883 is in Tate Britain.Provenance
