Princess Beatrice was the fifth daughter and youngest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Her birth coincided with the death of Prince Albert, and in her grief Victoria came to rely on the company of her youngest daughter, who she called Baby.

In this portrait Beatrice is shown with her shoulders half to the left and her face turned to the spectator. She wears a formal afternoon dress, pearl necklace and earrings. Payments to Von Angeli on 13 November 1893 included £210 for the portrait which was placed at Osborne but transferred in 1903 to Buckingham Palace.
