This double portrait commemorates the birth of Charles George Augustus (1766-1806), first son of Augusta, Duchess of Brunswick (1737-1813), sister of George III. Her husband is represented by an inscription on the urn celebrating his triumphs in battle and in love. The Swiss decorative artist was reputedly close to Joshua Reynolds and she emulated his style.
