A Jacobean interior, with a vista through to a gallery; on the right, Charles I and Henrietta Maria, followed by the 4th Earl of Pembroke, enter through a doorway and are greeted by the 3rd Earl; Jeffrey Hudson stands on the left, with two dogs.
Three other versions of this composition are known. The interior has not been satisfactorily identified and is probably imaginary, although the insertion of two of Charles I's most famous paintings by Titian, the Entombment and Supper at Emmaus on the far wall (both of which are now in the Louvre) meant that at one time the interior was believed to represent Whitehall. However these two paintings were hanging with ten other pictures in the First Privy Lodging Room according to Van der Doort's inventory. Instead, this painting perhaps shows one of the residences of the Earls of Pembroke (possibly Durham House in the Strand), since they are so prominently represented.
The architecture and figures are by different hands and the figures appear to have been copied from existing portraits - Charles I for example is based on a portrait by Mytens of c.1629, while the figure of Jeffrey Hudson is based on another portrait in the Royal Collection (402815). Both Earls carry their white staves of office, the 3rd Earl as Lord Steward, the 4th Earl as Lord Chamberlain.Provenance
