Friedrich Wilhelm Keyl (1823-71)
"Gipsy" Signed and dated 1868
-
This is probably the collie called Gipsy belonging to Queen Victoria which died in 1868. Keyl's account details the different stages of the work for this commission. He 'touched' a photograph of the dog and enlarged it for study; he made a chalk study before 'painting in' the oil picture; he painted a water colour, and, finally, completed 'Gypsey in Oil'.
Signed and dated: F.W. Keyl / 1868.Provenance
Painted for Queen Victoria; recorded hanging in the Kennels at Windsor Castle in 1878
