Ducks on the River Maas near Dordrecht c.1650
Oil on panel | 48.4 x 89.9 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405203

This panels has all the hallmarks of early Cuyp: a low-view point with extreme contrasts of near and far, the distance presented as a series planes like stage flats, each becoming more veiled by golden misty light as one moves into the distance. In spite of this the handling appears too polished and timid to be Cuyp himself.
On the left, a garganey male with a female behind; in the centre, a female mallard with a male on the right; top left, a flying garganey; other duck and boats on the river behind. The church in the distance is the Groote Kerk of Cuyp’s native Dordrecht.
Signed lower left: 'A. cuyp'Provenance
Acquired by George IV in 1810; recorded hanging in the ante-room ground floor at Carlton House in 1819 (no 133), valued at 80 guineas; in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace in 1841 (no 101)
