After Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830)
George IV (1762-1830) c.1822-50
-
A reduced format copy of Lawrence's portrait of George IV commissioned in 1822. The original picture is in the Wallace Collection and shows the King at full length, seated on a red sofa, wearing an understated form of court dress rather than the robes of office. Notably more informal than Lawrence's other portraits of the King, it was a gift from the sitter to his mistress Lady Conyngham. While much of the detail is not shown in this head and shoulders format, the King's insignia is visible - the Star of the Order of the Garter, and the Golden Fleece.
