Frederik Christian Kiaerskou (1805-91) a pupil of the landscape artist J.P. Møller, worked within the tradition of distinguished Danish artists such as C.W. Eckersberg. He worked mostly in Munich, exhibiting there as well as in Vienna.
Bernstorff House was the summer residence of the Danish royal family. Set in an extensive park to the north west of Copenhagen, this eighteenth-century stuccoed house was essentially a hunting lodge. Now it is part of the suburbs. Kiaerskou bathed the rural scene in an evening light reminiscent of works by Claude Lorrain. Kiaerskou's view of Bernstorff House was used as one of the designs for the Royal Copenhagen dessert service presented by the ladies of Denmark to the Prince and Princess of Wales on the occasion of their marriage in 1863. A small part of the dessert service is on view to the public in the China Museum at Windsor Castle. This painting, together with Heinrich Hansen's view Christiansborg Palace from Højbro Plads (RCIN 405125) hung for many years at Sandringham House. They were cleaned and restored especially for the Summer Opening of Buckingham Palace in 1998.Provenance
