This is a copy by Alexander Melville of a portrait of the Grand Duchess painted by Winterhalter in 1846 as a surprise for the Grand Duke on his birthday. Augusta (1822-1916) was Queen Victoria's cousin, the second of the three children of Adolphus Frederick, Duke of Cambridge (1774–1850), son of George III, and his wife, Princess Augusta (1797–1889).
Inscribed on the back with the date, 1853, and as copied after Winterhalter by Alexander Melville.Provenance
Painted for Queen Victoria in 1853; recorded in the 1853 Room at Buckingham Palace in 1876
