Johnson was a Naval officer and author a travel guide for France, Italy and Switzerland (1828) as well as painter. This depiction of a Knight of the Garter (possibly William IV) sailing in a steam ship off Dover is perhaps intended to contrast the old and the ‘modern’ forms of locomotion - the sail boat in the foreground looks especially in need of an upgrade. A steam yacht, with a smaller yacht off Dover, where the jetties are lined with spectators; in the bows of the smaller boat is a stout figure in a yachting-cap with the riband and star of the Order of the Garter.
