Queen Victoria had admired paintings by Roberts at the Royal Academy exhibition in 1840 and subsequently commissioned this painting. Roberts had visited Spain in 1832-3 but never went to Toledo. The material for the drawing of the subject for the oil painting had been collected by Edmund Head, later Governor of Canada, who had been in Spain with the artist. The scene depicts the Alcantara Bridge over the river Tagus.
