Heinrich von Angeli (1840-1925)
Queen Victoria (1819-1901) Signed and dated 1875
-
Queen Victoria shown in three-quarter-length, facing the viewer, hands clasped, her right hand holding a handkerchief, wearing the Riband and Star of the Order of the Garter, and the badge of the Order of Victoria and Albert. On the castle-like wall behind, the Royal Arms are painted above a circular relief containing the Queen's cipher, which may have been painted out. This was the first portrait Von Angeli painted of the Queen, and the artist was put up at the Castle while he was at work. There are many references to the progress of the painting in the Queen's Journal and in letters between the Queen and the Crown Princess who was anxious that her mother should be painted by Von Angeli and thereby come to share her admiration for him. During and after its creation the portrait was much admired by the Queen and others for its accuracy. Von Angeli was paid £300 for the painting from the Lord Chamberlain's Department and the Queen placed it, in its frame by Vokins, in the Oak Room at Windsor. A number of copies of the painting were made, with one sent to India in 1876 to be placed over the Viceregal throne during the Imperial Assemblage at Delhi.
