John Campbell, Marquess of Lorne, is shown with head and shoulders to the front in Highland dress with the ribbon and star of the Thistle. In 1871 the Marquess married Queen Victoria's fourth daughter, Louise, and in 1878 the pair moved to Ottowa when he was appointed the fourth Governor General of Canada. This portrait was painted for Queen Victoria at the same time as the portrait of his wife, Louise (RCIN 405366), and the Queen was very pleased with both likenesses. Von Angeli was paid £150 for the portrait in 1875 and it was placed at Osborne House.
