The sitter is shown at half-length, facing half to the right, his head turned half to the right, seated at a table covered with an oriental carpet. He is dressed in a Cardinal’s robes and rests his elbows on the table as he holds a large, open book in his hands. At the left of the table is a bell.
The sitter can be identified as Cardinal Domenico Grimani (1461-1523) as he appears in other, inscribed versions of the picture attributed to the school of Lotto. Eldest son of Doge Antonio Grimani (1434-1523), Domenico became a Cardinal in 1493 and Patriarch of Aquileia in 1497; his last years were spent in Venice with his collections. Ridolfi mentions portraits by Lotto in the house of Giovanni Grimani in Venice (1914 edn., p. 145).
Inscribed on the bell: ‘QVOD. VT / POTENTIAM TV…’Provenance
Acquired by George IV; listed in the Store at Carlton House in 1816 (no 288) and 1819 (no 281, valued at 25 guineas)
