Sir Peter Lely (1618-80)
Mary II (1662-94), when Princess c.1672
-
Mary is depicted as Diana, the goddess of hunting; in this guise she carries a bow, wears a crescent moon and is followed by a greyhound. Her rich silk gown recalls the dresses worn by the Windsor Beauties series in the Royal Collection painted by Lely. The landscape background reminds us of the work of Titian, whom the artist admired.
Provenance
Possibly the unfinished half-length Princess of Orange in James II's collection in a Wardrobe at St James's Palace in 1688 (no 1193); certainly in the Queen's Dressing Room at Windsor Castle in 1710 (no 76), where it remained until 1778; by 1792 it had moved to the King's Closet and by 1813 to the King's Old State Bedchamber at Windsor, where it appears in Pyne's illustrated Royal Residences of 1819 (RCIN 922106).
