Bowman's Moss, which was presumably named after James Bowman, a keeper on the Invercauld estate, lay to the south of the Woods of Garmaddie on the Balmoral estate.
The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1868.
Signed and dated: Peter Graham. 1868. Inscribed on the back with the name of the artist, the title and the date, 1869. On the back is the artist's label with the number 1 and his address, 13 Gloucester Terrace, Campden Hill.Provenance
Acquired by Queen Victoria; recorded in the stores at Windsor Castle in 1878
