The Battle of La Hogue is the name given to a series of events which occurred during the Nine Years War between 1689 and 1697. Depicted here is a battle that took place on the 23 May 1692, between the Anglo-Dutch fleet and the French. The English were commanded by Admiral of the Fleet, Edward Russell, later 1st Earl of Orford (1652-1727), the Dutch by Admiral Philips van Allemonde (1644-1711) and the French under Anne Hilarion de Cotentin, Comte de Tourville (1642-1701). Here three French warships are aflame off the coast at Cherbourg in Normandy, the Soleil Royal, Admirable and Triomphant. In the foregound sailors fight hand-to-hand in the rowing boats.
