Portrait of a Girl with a Guinea-pig Signed and dated 1677
-
This young girl has everything which the new Dutch aristocracy sought: a country house with a formal garden and marble furniture and statuary; damask drapery, silk dress, pearls and a guinea-pig, the latest pet imported from the Dutch East Indies.
Although the painting has been traditionally identified as by Casper Netscher, it is now attributed to his younger son, Constantijn (born in 1668) who signed his name in the same manner. Given the date of 1677 is painted with a different, much browner pigment than the signature, it is believed to have been added by a later hand.
