Sir Arthur Bigge had a distinguished career in the military and at court. He served in the Xhosa and Zulu Wars and was appointed Private Secretary to the Queen in 1895. She described him as 'a charming person, of the highest character, clever, amiable and agreeable, as well as good looking'. He was Private Secretary to George V when Prince of Wales and, from 1911, when King.
