The sitter for this portrait is seen riding to the right on a grey horse, wearing the ribbon and star of St. Esprit over a cuirass and holding a baton covered with fleur-de-lys; beyond him, a review of cavalry, with two mounted officers in the middle distance.

Probably acquired by George IV in 1818; recorded in store at Carlton House in 1819 (no 358); taken to Cumberland Lodge at Windsor in 1823
