Adriaen van de Velde (Amsterdam 1636-Amsterdam 1672)
Cattle and Sheep Resting under Trees: a Shepherdess Asleep Signed and dated 1668
-
This idyllic glade scene in perfect condition exactly captures what eighteenth and nineteenth century collectors sought in this popular artist: precision in the detail and a poetic mood evoked in spite of the mundane motif.
On the right, two cows and a sheep are seated at the foot of a pair of trees, with more animals further back; a pond in the distance; on the left, a seated donkey and, behind, the sleeping shepherdess with her dog.
