Queen Alexandra was very fond of parrots. Contemporary photographs show that several caged birds and birds on perches were kept in her Dressing Room at Sandringham, and a caged cockatoo was kept in the Saloon from the 1880s. King Edward VII also kept caged birds both at Marlborough House, and later at Buckingham Palace. This parrot is carved from agate and rests on a perch of gold, white guilloché enamel and silver-gilt set with diamonds.
