Karl Adloff (1819-63) was a landscape painter known for his views of Dutch canals. He represented the play of light and the reflections of the sun or moon on water with great subtlety. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has three of his paintings.
Ehrenbreitstein Fortress (Festung Ehrenbreitstein) is situated on the eponymous mountain on the east bank of the Rhine, opposite the town of Koblenz (formerly Coblenz) in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Due to its vulnerability to attack from the French, the fortification of Koblenz became a Prussian strategic priority, and construction of a system of defences continued from 1817 to 1834. The Fortress, one of the largest in Europe, was part of the fortification; it was never attacked and remained in service until 1890.
