Clarkson Stanfield (1793-1867)
Portsmouth Harbour Signed and dated 1831
-
The painting depicts the mouth of Portsmouth harbour. On the right is the dome of St Thomas's church; in the centre is the Semaphore Tower, Saluting Battery and Round Tower; on the left is Blockhouse Point and Gosport. In the middle of the painting, inside the harbor, the Victory, Lord Nelson's flagship, can be seen and a frigate in full sail is leaving the harbour.
King William had seen Stanfield's large picture of St Michael's Mount at the Royal Academy in 1830 and as a result had commissioned the artist to paint this view of Portsmouth harbour and the ceremony of the opening of the new London Bridge (RCIN 404711).
