-
This painting is a copy of Franz Xaver Winterhalter's portrait of Prince Albert painted in 1859 (RCIN 405130), but here the Prince wears Windsor uniform (instead of that of the Rifle Brigade) and the badge of the Bath (as opposed to that of the Golden Fleece), along with the ribbon and star of the Garter. Queen Victoria described the original as 'truly magnificent' and numerous copies were made as it was regarded as the new official likeness.
Signed and dated: Herbert Smith / Pinxt 1862. Inscribed on the back as a copy, 1862, by Smith from Winterhalter's portrait of 1859.Provenance
Painted for Queen Victoria; recorded hanging in the Queen's Dressing Room (Room no 213) at Windsor Castle in 1878
