Carl Rudolph was the son of Carl Ferdinand Sohn (1805-1867); the father was known to Queen Victoria through his portrait of the Queen of Hanover (RCIN 405078); the son was employed by members of the Royal Family 1882-6.
Prince Henry (1858-96) was the husband of Queen Victoria's youngest daughter Beatrice and known as 'Liko' in the family. Two days before Princess Beatrice married Prince Henry, Queen Victoria gave her 'Sohn's picture of Liko …which is an excellent likeness. To Liko I gave the pendant of Beatrice, which I do not like'. (RCIN408907).
Prince Henry is wearing the ordinary duty uniform of a Lieutenant in the Prussian Gardes du Corps with the star of the Order of Ludwig of Hesse and the badge of the Order of Philipp of Hesse.
