This painting is one of a set of four 'Virtues', the others being La Naïveté (RCIN 404538), L'Innocence (RCIN 406400) and La Pudeur (RCIN 404627), painted for Queen Victoria by Hermann Winterhalter, the brother of Franz Xaver Winterhalter. Queen Victoria described it as a 'very pretty painting' in her Journal.
Provenance
Given to Prince Albert by Queen Victoria on 24th December 1843; recorded in the Prince Consort's Dressing Room at Buckingham Palace in 1868
