Description

This is a derivation from the standard portrait of Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII. She is shown in head and shoulder view, holding an open book in her hands and wearing the costume of a widow. The best surviving version of this portrait type is at St John’s College, Cambridge.

Provenance

Probably acquired by Queen Caroline from Lord Cornwallis; recorded in the Private Closet at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 637)
