Henry IV (1367-1413) c.1550-1650
-
Half-length portrait of Henry IV (1367-1413), facing slightly to the left, wearing a green regal robe with a red cap, holding a red rose in his right hand and a sceptre in his left.
There are two versions of this portrait in the collection (RCIN 402737 and 404745); one is recorded at Kensington on 5 April 1729 and the other was probably acquired slightly later with the set of historical portraits from Charles Cornwallis, 1st Earl Cornwallis (1700-62). Both appear at Kensington Palace in 1818; this one in the Private Closet with the other Cornwallis portraits, which suggests that this is one of them.Provenance
Probably acquired by Queen Caroline from Lord Cornwallis; certainly in the Private Closet at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 630)
