Head and shoulders portrait of Mary I (1516-1558). She is facing the front, her head turned slightly to the left, wearing a dark velvet robe with a stiff embroidered collar, a gold pendant and a headdress decorated with pearls. An embroidered red cloth is draped across a ledge in foreground. This portrait derives from the three-quarter length portrait of Mary I by Anthonis Mor of which the best version in in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. Anthonis Mor was born in Utrecht and worked in Antwerp, Italy, Spain and Portugal. In 1554 he came to London and painted an official portrait of Mary I for Philip II of Spain as part of their marriage negotiations.

Probably part of the set of royal portraits secured by Queen Caroline from Lord Cornwallis; recorded in the Private Closet at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 648)
