Paulus Moreelse (Utrecht 1571-Utrecht 1638)
Portrait of a Young Boy Signed and dated 1634
-
This toddler wears a dress, as was usual for both sexes before boys were ‘breeched’ at the age of five. He holds a coral, to help him to cut his teeth, with little bells attached. The prosperity of parents is shown by the curtain, fine marble floor, by the boy’s plumed hat and by the care with which his starched apron has been pressed. The subtlety in the observation on the face of soft shadows, with direct and reflected light, is also seen in Rembrandt’s portraits of this date.
