The sitter wears two Danish orders, the Order of the Elephant and the Dannebrog. There is a crown on the pedestal next to him, which appears to be resting on a cushion and sitting in a sort of ermine case. The sitter is possibly Charles I of Hesse-Philippsthal (1682-1770) who joined the Danish Army and distinguished himself in the Battle of Helsingborg of 1710; five years later he participated in the siege of Stralsund. He was awarded the Order of the Elephant in 1731. The pendant portrait, RCIN 404685, presumably depicts his wife, Princess Caroline Christine of Saxe-Eisenach (1699-1743). Alternatively the sitters could be Frederick IV of Denmark 1671-1730 (404689) and his Queen, Anne Sophie Reventlow 1673-1743 (404685)
