There are fifteen paintings in the collection associated with the name Lucas Cranach (I and II); one was acquired in the 17th Century, one in the 18th Century and the remainder in the 19th Century. Prince Albert particularly admired Cranach, acquiring ten works, partly as an example of early German art and partly as the court painter to his ancestors.
In this pedestrian pastiche of Cranach's style, Salome, in German costume, stands behind a parapet on which rests the charger with the head of Saint John the Baptist. In the courtyard of a castle in the background we see the Saint's decapitation.Provenance
One of the group of early German works from the 77 paintings belonging to Prince Ludwig von Oettingen-Wallerstein (1791-1870), which were first offered to Prince Albert in 1847 as security for a loan and came into his possession by default (no 41 in Waagen’s catalogue of 1854); 25 of them were accepted by the National Gallery in 1863
