Adriaen Ysenbrandt became a Master of the Bruges Guild in 1510 and was active there until his death in 1551. His name has become associated with various works which may in fact have been created by different (unidentified) artists, but which have stylistic similarities.
This painting depicts the mourning of the dead Christ by Mary Magdalen and another of the Maries. It is a fragment of a larger panel, and there is evidence of the drapery of another figure behind Christ. The composition is thought to derive from an original by Gerard David.Provenance
One of the group of early Flemish works from the 77 paintings belonging to Prince Ludwig von Oettingen-Wallerstein (1791-1870), which were first offered to Prince Albert in 1847 as security for a loan and came into his possession by default (no 73 in Waagen’s catalogue of 1854); 25 of them were accepted by the National Gallery in 1863
