Maurice Müther is wearing Windsor uniform with the badge of the Royal Victorian Order. His medals include the Jubilee medal. He was tutor to Prince Ernest, Hereditary Grand Duke of Hesse, and in 1887 became German Secretary to Queen Victoria. Princess Victoria of Hesse wrote to the Queen: 'it was sad parting from him, for though he had some little faults, being hasty and hot-tempered, he is an excellent man with a very kind & affectionate heart'.
