The original portrait by Nathaniel Dance at Lambeth Palace is signed and dated 1773. This copy by Thomas Parkinson (also signed and dated in the case 1781) was presumably commissioned by George III after the sitter's death in that year in acknowledgement of Thomas's service as the 'Preceptor' of his youth, a post to which Thomas was appointed in 1752.
Provenance
Commissioned by George III; recorded in the King's Closet (or 'Wardrobe') at Buckingham Palace in 1790; removed from there in 1804 or 1805 to Windsor Castle, where it is listed in the Council Room of the King's lower apartments in 1813
