George II (1683-1760) 1759-60
-
The life-size original of this composition was painted in 1759, the likeness taken supposedly unseen by the King 'as he was speaking to one of his attendants at the top of the great Staircase at Kensington Palace'. It was engraved in 1766 by William Dickinson and hangs at Audley End. This is a good reduced copy, possibly by Pine himself. The King is shown standing at the head of a staircase, wearing the garter and the ribbon of the Order of the Garter; a grenadier of the 2nd Foot Guards and a Yeoman of the Guard are seen lower on the staircase.
Provenance
Presented to George IV by Mr Vaughan, 1816; recorded in store at Carlton House in 1816 (no. 380) and 1819 (no 435); taken to Cumberland Lodge in 1823; in Windsor Castle in 1859 (Room 257)
