This painting, whose title means Modesty, is one of a set of four 'Virtues', the others being La Naïveté (RCIN 404538), Simplicity (RCIN 404782) and L'Innocence (RCIN 406400), painted for Queen Victoria by Hermann Winterhalter, the brother of Franz Xaver Winterhalter.

Given to Prince Albert by Queen Victoria at Christmas 1849; recorded in the Prince Consort's Dressing Room at Buckingham Palace in 1868
