Peasants in a Tavern Signed and dated 1665
Oil on panel | 36.2 x 32.3 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 404619
-
In its boisterous, rotund figures and impression of peasant prosperity this tavern scene celebrates the legacy of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, almost a century after his death. Tobacco was a recent import into Holland and was frequently mixed with more narcotic substances. Smoking in art probably carried the same sort of associations as drunkenness. There may also have been a desire to demonstrate how painting could miraculously evoke the sense of smell through the eyes. Inscribed upper left: 'Av Ostade 1665' and on the tabled hanging on the wall: ‘Dit huis is te koop te vragen by Av. Ostade’ (This house is for sale, enquire A van Ostade).
Provenance
Purchased by George IV from Sir Thomas Baring as part of a group of 86 Dutch and Flemish paintings, most of which were collected by Sir Thomas’s father, Sir Francis Baring; they arrived at Carlton House on 6 May 1814; recorded in the Bow Room, Ground Floor, at Carlton House in 1819 (no 112); in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace in 1841 (no 25)
