The painting illustrates an episode from the play The Merry Wives of Windsor by William Shakespeare. Anne Page, a young woman chased by several suitors, comes out of the house bearing wine, but her father tells her: 'Nay, daughter, carry the wine in; we'll drink within'. Frith exhibited another painting at the Royal Academy called Anne Page. "The dinner is on the table, etc.", a later moment in the same scene.
