El Paseo (The Walk) depicts two young Spanish women. In the background is a town and a couple taking a walk. Queen Victoria recorded in her Journal on 31 October 1852: ‘we were much pleased with some very clever & talented sketches & studies of Spanish gipsies at Seville & Ronda, & of some Sevillanas, – by an artist of the name of Phillip. Landseer has recommended him & his work is certainly very clever & full of character’. The Queen thought that, apart from Winterhalter, no other artist painted with such fresh colours. The Scottish artist became known as ‘Spanish Phillip’ because of his evocative depictions of Spanish subjects. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1855. Signed and dated: JP [in monogram] 1854. Inscribed on the back, probably by the artist, with his name, the title and the date, 1854. A label on the back gives the title and the artist’s name and address (South Villa, Campden Hill, Kensington).
Provenance
Given to Prince Albert by Queen Victoria on his birthday, 25th December 1854; recorded hanging in the Prince Consort's apartments (Room no 208) at Windsor Castle in 1878
