John Phillip (1817-67)
A Spanish Gipsy Mother Signed and dated 1852
-
Queen Victoria recorded in her Journal on 31 October 1852: 'we were much pleased with some very clever & talented sketches & studies of Spanish gipsies at Seville & Ronda, & of some Sevillanas, – by an artist of the name of Phillip. Landseer has recommended him & his work is certainly very clever & full of character'. The Queen thought that, apart from Winterhalter, no other artist painted with such fresh colours. The Scottish artist became known as 'Spanish Phillip' because of his evocative depictions of Spanish subjects.
Signed and dated: John Phillip – / 1852. Inscribed on the back with the artist's name and the title of the picture.Provenance
