Bianca, meaning 'white', is a girl's name in Italian. Here we see a young woman in a white, Venetian-style Renaissance costume, her hands folded at her waist. Two white doves are perched on the curved wall behind her among white flowers.
Though painted three years later this work forms a pair with Leighton's Nanna (404570) of identical size. Assuming that this pairing was intended Leighton may be trying to contrast two different styles of beauty: the dark brooding glamour of the peacock in Nanna (subtitled Pavonia and featuring a peacock's feather) and the light wholesome radiance of the dove in Bianca.Provenance
