This sketch is derived from the portrait of Princess Alexandra in the painting of her wedding (RCIN 404545) by Frith, although she does not appear to be wearing her wedding dress here. It was given by the artist to Princess Mary after she held Princess Alexandra's hand when she was first painted by Frith because the Princess was so nervous. In December 1863 Frith wrote to his brother that he had 'made a most satisfactory study of the Princess of Wales'.
