A full-length portrait of Queen Mary (1867-1953), standing, facing slightly to the right, wearing a gown of gold brocade crossed by the Ribbon of the Garter, completed by a train of deeper gold. In her hands is a Chinese fan which belonged to Queen Victoria. Her jewellery includes the Order of the Garter, and pendant and Queen Mary's Vladimir Tiara (RCIN 200145).
This is a companion to the portrait of King George V (1865-1936) painted by Jack in 1926 (RCIN 405547). Queen Mary recorded in her diary that she sat to the artist on 2, 9, 12, 21 and 28 March. Sittings mostly took place in the White Drawing Room in Buckingham Palace, which was turned into a temporary studio. The King noted in his diary of Saturday 12 March: 'In afternoon watched Jack painting a picture of May, which is very good.' The painting is recorded hanging in the Principal Corridor in Buckingham Palace in 1931.
The frame is by Francis Draper of 67 Park Street, Grosvenor Square.Provenance
