The rider in this painting adopts exactly the same pose as the figure of the Duke of Marlborough in a group portrait (Sotheby’s 24 June 1959, lot 3) signed Pieter van Bloemen and dated 1714. The sash of the Garter here further suggests that the sitter may be the Duke of Marlborough; unfortunately the features are not sufficiently precise to be recognisable with certainty. The gentleman rider is accompanied by a groom wearing a white turban and a metal collar, which marks him out as an enslaved person.

Purchased for George IV by Sir William Knighton in 1829; added to the Carlton House inventory dated 1819 (no 625), valued at 40 guineas
