Princess Beatrice (1857-1944) was the youngest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She married Prince Henry of Battenberg in Whippingham Church on the Isle of Wight. Queen Victoria was initially opposed to the match, but eventually she agreed to the marriage on condition that Prince Henry resigned his commission in the Prussian army and that the couple made their home with her. In the painting the Princess is accompanied to the altar by her brother, the Prince of Wales, and Queen Victoria. Her nieces were bridesmaids, but only eight out of the total of 10 are shown here. On the day of the wedding Queen Victoria noted in her Journal: 'All the Royalties were photographed on the Terrace [at Osborne], for the picture of the wedding, which Mr Caton Woodville is going to paint'.
The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1888.
