Louis XV succeeded his great-grandfather Louis XIV in 1715 when he was only five years. This portrait shows the sitter at approximately this age, his left hand resting upon his crown on a blue cushion. He wears a blue coat with the ribbon and star of Saint Esprit. This image may be compared with Augustin-Oudart Justina's c. 1717 portrait of the King (Versailles Museum).
The frame of this portrait bears the misleading title 'Louis, duc de Bourgogne', Louis XV's father.Provenance
Probably the portrait of 'Louis XV as a boy' listed in Carlton House store in 1816 (no 360) and 1819 (no 227), its dimensions given as 2ft 6in x 2ft 1in (76 x 63.5cm)
